Biochar is what your waste becomes. It is a stable, carbon-rich solid — dry, black, and granular — made by heating plant waste without oxygen. It is not compost, not charcoal for cooking, and not a traditional fertilizer.

Why it is stable for centuries

Because the carbon was locked into a solid during pyrolysis rather than released as gas, it does not break back down easily. Applied to soil, that carbon stays put for hundreds of years. That permanence is exactly what makes biochar valuable as a carbon removal — the CO2 your waste would have released is instead held in the ground.

What it does in the soil

Biochar's first commercial destination is as a soil amendment. Worked into farmland, it improves soil structure, increases water retention, and boosts nutrient availability.

The second destination

Because it permanently locks carbon away, biochar also qualifies for the international carbon credit market as a verified removal. That is what turns the output into revenue — covered in the next step.
